Job Description

About Boston Bugs

Boston Bugs provides specialized pest management services to residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional customers throughout the Greater Boston area. Our commercial division supports businesses operating in highly regulated environments where pest prevention is a critical component of food safety, public health, regulatory compliance, and brand protection.

Many of our clients operate facilities that undergo regular inspections by regulators, auditors, customers, and third-party certification organizations. These businesses depend on professional pest management programs that go far beyond routine pest control services.

To support continued growth within our commercial services division, we are seeking a Commercial Food Safety Pest Specialist to work with food-related facilities throughout the Boston metropolitan area.

Position Overview

The Commercial Food Safety Pest Specialist is responsible for implementing, monitoring, documenting, and improving pest management programs within food-related commercial environments.

Unlike residential technicians whose primary focus is service delivery at individual homes, this role requires a detailed understanding of food safety requirements, facility operations, audit expectations, pest prevention strategies, and long-term risk management.

The successful candidate will work closely with facility managers, quality assurance personnel, sanitation teams, maintenance departments, and operational leadership to help maintain pest-free environments while supporting food safety objectives.

This position combines technical expertise, inspection skills, documentation, customer communication, and regulatory awareness.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed pest management inspections at food-related facilities.
  • Monitor pest activity using established inspection protocols.
  • Evaluate sanitation, exclusion, and structural conditions.
  • Identify factors contributing to pest risk.
  • Develop corrective action recommendations.
  • Maintain pest monitoring devices and reporting systems.
  • Prepare professional inspection reports.
  • Support customer audit preparation activities.
  • Participate in food safety meetings when requested.
  • Review pest management trends and inspection findings.
  • Coordinate with customer personnel regarding corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate service documentation and compliance records.

Facilities Supported

Services may be provided to:

  • Food manufacturing facilities.
  • Food packaging operations.
  • Distribution centers.
  • Commercial bakeries.
  • Restaurants.
  • Institutional kitchens.
  • School food service operations.
  • Food storage facilities.
  • Beverage production facilities.
  • Hospitality food preparation environments.

Each environment presents unique pest prevention challenges and operational requirements.

Inspection Responsibilities

The specialist conducts comprehensive inspections focused on identifying both pest activity and contributing risk factors.

Inspection areas commonly include:

  • Receiving docks.
  • Storage areas.
  • Production lines.
  • Packaging areas.
  • Waste management locations.
  • Utility rooms.
  • Employee break areas.
  • Exterior facility grounds.
  • Roof access points.
  • Structural penetrations.

The objective is not simply to identify pests but to understand why pest risks exist and how they can be reduced.

Food Safety Collaboration

A major component of the role involves working directly with customer teams responsible for food safety and quality assurance.

Activities may include:

  • Reviewing pest management trends.
  • Discussing corrective action plans.
  • Supporting audit preparation.
  • Evaluating sanitation-related concerns.
  • Reviewing monitoring data.
  • Assisting with preventative strategies.
  • Participating in facility reviews.

The specialist must be able to communicate effectively with both operational and technical personnel.

Documentation Responsibilities

Documentation is particularly important within food-related environments.

Required records may include:

  • Inspection reports.
  • Monitoring logs.
  • Corrective action recommendations.
  • Trend analyses.
  • Device location records.
  • Activity observations.
  • Follow-up verification reports.

Reports must be accurate, professional, and capable of supporting customer audit requirements.

Problem-Solving Responsibilities

The Commercial Food Safety Pest Specialist regularly investigates issues such as:

  • Repeated pest activity.
  • Structural vulnerabilities.
  • Storage-related concerns.
  • Sanitation deficiencies.
  • Rodent entry points.
  • Insect breeding conditions.
  • Exterior environmental pressures.
  • Operational practices affecting pest risk.

The successful candidate must be capable of identifying root causes rather than merely treating symptoms.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Minimum three years of pest management experience.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Professional customer communication abilities.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Commercial pest management experience.
  • Food facility experience.
  • Food safety experience.
  • HACCP familiarity.
  • Quality assurance experience.
  • Regulatory compliance experience.
  • Pest management licensing and certifications.

Key Competencies

Successful candidates typically demonstrate:

  • Analytical thinking.
  • Professional judgment.
  • Technical expertise.
  • Observation skills.
  • Documentation accuracy.
  • Communication effectiveness.
  • Customer relationship management.
  • Continuous learning.

Performance Measurements

Success in this role is evaluated through:

  • Inspection quality.
  • Customer satisfaction.
  • Documentation accuracy.
  • Audit support effectiveness.
  • Corrective action completion rates.
  • Regulatory compliance outcomes.
  • Customer retention.
  • Professional development achievements.

Benefits

  • Medical insurance.
  • Dental insurance.
  • Vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with company contribution.
  • Paid vacation.
  • Paid holidays.
  • Annual professional development allowance.
  • Performance incentive program.
  • Company vehicle allowance.
  • Mobile technology package.
  • Licensing and certification support.
  • Employee assistance program.

Work Environment

This position is field-based and involves regular travel throughout the Greater Boston area. Work is performed within active commercial environments including food manufacturing facilities, distribution operations, institutional kitchens, and related facilities. Professional interaction with customer management teams is a routine component of the role.

Career Development

Successful Commercial Food Safety Pest Specialists may advance into Senior Commercial Specialist, Food Safety Program Manager, Technical Services Manager, Quality Assurance Director, Commercial Operations Manager, or Regional Leadership positions.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday during standard business hours. Occasional early morning, evening, or customer-requested visits may be required to support facility operations, audits, or special projects.
